NHAI Bonds Listing

THE tax free bonds of the National Highway Authority of India made their debut on the stock market with a bang on Wednesday. At the end of its listing day on the National Stock Exchange, the paper in its two series gained 2.8 and 3.6 per cent.

Considering that investors put in their money in the bonds just 34 days ago, their gain was fantastic. Based on Day One returns, the annualised pre-tax return for Series I (8.2 per cent) and Series II (8.3 per cent) works out to 33 and 43 per cent, respectively.

At the current market price of the 10-year Series I, the current yield after the listing gains is around 7.78 per cent. This is a tax free rate resulting in a pre-tax yield of 11.26 per cent for the highest tax bracket.

For the 20 per cent tax bracket, it is at 9.80 per cent, according to a note by ICICI Securities.

With such mega returns from the NHAI bond, investors will be looking forward to the listing of other tax-free bonds from Power Finance Corporation, IRFC and Hudco.

Investors should continue to hold these bonds, as apart from a tax free yield of 7.78 per cent (pre-tax: 11.26 per cent), there is the possibility of further capital gains once RBI starts cutting rates.

Being a long-term government backed bond, it also reduces the re investment risk once system interest rates come down. The bond deserves to be part of any fixed income portfolio.

The issue was oversubscribed 3.8 times in the QIB category and 2.7 times in the HNI on the first day itself. NHAI began with a plan to raise Rs 5,000 crore from the bonds but ended up with Rs 10,000 crore.

However, only half of the allotted retail portion was subscribed.

Currently, fixed deposit rates for five years and more are around 9.5-10 per cent. Therefore, for investors in the highest tax bracket, the NHAI bonds should be preferred to FDs.

Because of the large issue size of Rs10,000 crore and high institutional interest, liquidity is likely to be better than in the case of other bonds. Therefore, they should be able to transact without much transaction cost in future also.

The market price of the bond should improve when inflation dropped.

Then one can get a very good price with a fall in the yield.

REC to use IRFC quota of tax free bonds

Rural Electrification Corporation has received a bonanza from the government in the form of a ~3,000-crore, tax free bond window for this year. The window was created by the Indian Railways, which has not used its entire quota of tax-free bonds.

REC would launch the tax free issue by early March, director (finance) HD Khunteta told Business Standard. So far, the company has raised ~22,000 crore this year. The government has included us in the list for tax-free bonds for the first time.

The railways had conveyed it did not want to raise any more money this year. This followed the Indian Railways Finance Corporation (IRFC) raising ~7,031 crore under the tax-free route. "The railways had earlier asked for rolling over the unutilised ~3,000-crore window to the next year, but the government decided to let REC utilise this in the current year," he said.

The railways borrows money through IRFC, but has reduced its borrowings this year after a 16 per cent cut in its Plan size for 2011-12. The infrastructure bonds were a given tax-free status to encourage flow of funds to the infrastructure sector.

In Budget 2011-12, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee had allowed the National Highways Authority of India to raise ~10,000 crore, IRFC ~10,000 crore, Hudco ~5,000 crore and Power Finance Corporation ~5,000 crore through the tax-free bond issue route.

Bonds worth an additional ~5,000 crore were allowed for the port sector, but with no dedicated finance company in the sector, this window remained unutilised.

Of the total ~30,000 crore to be raised through these agencies, ~25,000 crore would be raised during the year. The interest income on these bonds is tax free in the hands of investor, and there is no deduction of tax at source.

IDBI Bank - Infrastructure Debt Fund

State-run IDBI Bank will launch the country's first infrastructure debt fund (IDF) to raise $5 billion for building roads, ports and airports. Such debt funds, announced in the budget 2011-12, can be floated through non-banking finance companies (NBFC) or as trusts. They were proposed two years ago by a panel led by HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh, which had suggested an initial corpus of . 50,000 crore.

IDBI Bank has sought Reserve Bank of India's approval for an NBFC, which will have a capital base of . 1,000 crore. The bank will hold 30% stake in the NBFC and the rest will be held by some state-run banks and LIC, said a top banker involved in the process. The new entity under the relaxed norms can provide longterm debt of over . 25,000 crore in the infrastructure sector. IDBI Bank CMD RM Malla declined to comment.

According to current guidelines, IDFs can raise funds from investors, primarily domestic and offshore insurance and pension funds, trusted sources for long-term finance. The fund established under a trust will be a mutual fund that will issue units and will be regulated by Sebi while a company-based fund will be a non-banking finance company that will issue bonds and will be regulated by the RBI.

At the end of every financial year, many tax payers frantically make investments to minimize taxes, without adequate knowledge of the various available options. The Income Tax Act offers many more incentives and allowances, apart from the popular 80C, which could reduce tax liability substantially for the salaried individuals. Here are seven smart tips to help you save more and reduce taxes.

1. Salary Restructuring to reduce Tax

Restructuring your salary may not always be possible. But if your company permits, or if you are on good terms with your HR department, restructuring a few components could reduce your tax liability.

Opt for food coupons instead of lunch allowances, as they are exempt from tax up to Rs 60,000 p.a.
Include medical allowance, transport allowance, education allowance, uniform expenses (if any), and telephone expenses as part of salary. Produce bills of actual expenses incurred for these allowances to reduce tax.
Opt for the company car instead of using your own car, to reduce high prerequisite taxation.

2. Tax Saving under Section 80C

Section 80C offers a maximum deduction of up to Rs. 1, 00,000. Utilize this section to the fullest by investing in any of the available investment options. A few of the options are as follows.

Public Provident Fund (PPF)
Life Insurance Premium
National Savings Certificate (NSC)
Equity Linked Savings Scheme (ELSS)
5 year fixed deposits with banks and post office.
Tuition fees paid for children's education, up to a maximum of 2 children.

3. Options to save tax beyond 80C

If you have exhausted your limit of one lakh under section 80C, here are a few more options.

Section 80D – Deduction of Rs. 15,000 for medical insurance of self, spouse and dependent children and Rs. 20,000 for medical insurance of parents above 65 years.
Section 80CCF - Deduction of Rs 20,000, in addition to the Rs 1 lakh under 80C, for investments in notified infrastructure bonds.
Section 80G - Donations to specified funds or charitable institutions.

4. House Rent Allowance and Tax

Are you paying rent, yet not receiving any HRA from your company? The least of the following could be claimed under Section 80GG.

25% of the total income or,
Rs 2,000 per month or,
Excess of rent paid over 10% of total income
This deduction will however not be allowed, if you, your spouse or minor child owns a residential accommodation in the location where you reside or perform office duties.
If HRA forms part of your salary, then the minimum of the following three is available as exemption.
The actual HRA received from your employer
The actual rent paid by you for the house, minus 10% of your salary (this includes basic + dearness allowance, if any)
50% of your basic salary (for a metro) or 40% of your basic salary (for non-metro).

5. Tax Saving from Home Loans

Use your home loan efficiently to save more tax. The principal component of your loan, is included under Section 80c, offering a deduction up to Rs. 1, 00,000. The interest portion offers a deduction up to Rs. 1, 50,000 separately under Section 24.

6. Leave Travel Allowance and Tax

Use your Leave Travel Allowance for your holidays, which is available twice in a block of four years. In case you have been unable to claim the benefit in a particular 4 year block, you could now carry forward one journey to the succeeding block and claim it in the first calendar year of that block. Thus, you may be eligible for three exemptions in that block.

7. Bonus and Tax

A bonus from your employer is fully taxable in the year in which you receive it. However request your employer for the following.

If you anticipate tax rates to be reduced or slabs to be modified in the subsequent year, see if you could push the bonus payment to the subsequent year.
Produce your tax investment details well before, to prevent your employer from deducting tax on bonus before handing it over.

Keep in mind the below points, to avoid the hassles of last minute tax planning.

Give your employer details loans and tax saving investments before hand, to prevent any excess deduction.
Check the Form 16 received at the end of each year from your employer thoroughly.
It is important to start your tax planning well before 31^st March, and to file your returns before the 31^st of July each year.

REC Plans Rs 1500 cr NCD Issue at 9.28%

State-run power financier Rural Electrification Corp will enter the capital market to raise . 1,500 crore in five-year non-convertible debentures in a day or two, a senior executive said. REC has finalised a 9.28% coupon and plans to strike swap deals of equivalent amount to reduce the effective cost.

REC's director (finance) HD Khunteta said the corporation is looking to reduce cost by around 150 basis points by doing interest rate swap deals with banks. REC will swap the fixed coupon for a six-month or one-year Japanese yen-denominated Libor rate. After the swap deal, REC will receive 9.28% a year from the counter-party and pay six-month or one-year yen Libor plus a spread.

An investment banker close to the development said REC will certainly save cost in the first year as yen Libor rates remained low. But the situation may change from next year if the interest rate in Japan rises. Again, at the end of the swap period, REC will face an exchange rate risk.

REC said minimum investment will be . 200 crore per bidder for this issue, which will be listed on the wholesale debt segment of the National Stock Exchange. The power financier will pay the coupon semi-annually. Investment bankers said the REC's offer is in line with market rates. A comparable REC 2016 paper was traded at 9.28% on Wednesday, while 2015 PowerGrid paper was traded at 9.25%.
The company has also done road shows for its proposed $200-million Swiss bond issue and is waiting for investors' response.

Meanwhile, Export Import Bank of India also plans to enter the bond market to raise a minimum . 125 crore for three years at 9.25% annually. There is an unspecified green shoe option attached to the issue.

Platinum is gaining popularity, but it has a long way to go before qualifying as an investment option

First, it was gold, then came diamond, and now it is the turn of platinum. These days, platinum bands, pendants and solitaires set in platinum are increasingly getting associated with engagements and weddings in India. The grey-white metal, popular in Japan, the US and China for expensive jewellery, has made its way into Indian weddings -- especially in the urban areas and the metros. Platinum was already popular in the highend customer segment, who prefer setting a solitaire in platinum because of its density. But now even retail buyers are buying engagement bands and pendants because of its attractive pricing. Platinum looks attractive at current price levels. Till recently, platinum was sold at a premium to gold. But, after the bull run in the yellow metal, gold and platinum prices are at the same level today. But is attractive pricing alone a good enough reason to gift your special-one the 'rare' metal? Here are some facts you need to know about platinum before you own one.

Not An Investment

Platinum is still in the process of gaining popularity as compared to gold and diamond in the country. At present, consumption of gold stands at 300-350 tons in India, whereas the consumption of platinum is only 10 tons. Hence remember that the market is not mature enough if you are planning to buy platinum from an investment perspective.

Apart from the platinum market being at a very nascent stage, gold and diamond partially have an Indian origin. Since gold and diamond have traditionally been used in India for making jewellery, so they are still preferred. Platinum is yet to gain popularity as an investment option because of awareness issues.
In case of gold, people have an option to buy gold jewellery/ coins/bars depending upon the end use. They may buy coins today if there is no immediate requirement to buy jewellery. By doing so, they can hedge themselves from a possible price rise. But people do not have any such option in platinum as of today. They have no other option but to buy jewellery.

No Price Benchmark

An investor can track the price of gold on a daily basis, which gives clarity in pricing. However, both in case of diamond and platinum, a buyer cannot track the prices and there are chances that prices may vary for the same quantity and quality of the metal from one jeweller to another. In the case of diamonds, it is often sold on an asking rate. Rapaport price is a loose benchmark for the price of diamonds. The mean price is lower or higher to this price. It is based on external conditions such as demand-supply and foreign exchange. Moreover, De Beers swing the market to a certain degree given that they are a big boy of the industry. They artificially suppress the demand or supply depending upon the market condition. Hence the pricing is not as transparent as gold.

In case of platinum, it all boils down to the tie-up between the jewellers and the vendors. Very few jewellers sell platinum jewellery in India. It is most popular in the urban areas and the metros. Hence, jewelers don't really compete in this segment to form an aggressive pricing policy. It depends on at what cost I source the metal from the vendor.

Hallmarking

Even as platinum is an upcoming segment as compared to other precious metals, hallmarking is already in place for this metal. The Platinum Guild International, which also has a presence in India, has a set of authorised jewellers who sell platinum in India. The list is mentioned on the website of the Platinum Guild India. Apart from the set of authorised jewellers, every platinum product is authenticated by a third party certification by the Underwriters Laboratories, also popularly known as the UL card. So insist on this card from the jeweller, which gives authenticity to your purchase, that too by a neutral party.

Buy Back

The platinum market is at a very nascent stage today. Very selective jewellers are selling platinum in India, hence the buy back policy is not as flexible as in the case of gold. You can exchange it for jewellery only from the same store/ brand you originally purchased from. And you will get back only 85% of the value of platinum.

If you still feel like pampering your loved one or even yourself with a platinum band or a formal jewellery, you can still go ahead. It costs as much as gold. But remember this is just a purchase which may attain some investment value in future. If you are lured just by the look of it and still want an investment quotient to your purchase, you have other similar looking options such as white gold, which has a more matured market in India. If you opt to buy platinum, ensure you buy it from an approved jeweller and get the UL card as well.

Gold

Most analysts expect prices to remain firm or go higher in the medium- to long-term. Whether your objective is investment or consumption, their recommendation is 'buy'

Compared to equities, gold cannot be termed a wealth-creator. Also, emotional factors create hurdles when it comes to selling, making it illiquid in this context

Platinum

Thanks to the galloping gold prices, platinum prices do not command a substantial premium over those of the yellow metal anymore. So, it is as affordable as gold now

The platinum market is at a nascent stage, with just a select few jewellers dealing in platinum, making buy back relatively difficult

Diamond

A rising demand makes diamonds attractive. The difference in prices of gold and diamond is narrowing, making the latter look more affordable

An opaque pricing structure, lack of standardisation when it comes to determining the quality and buy-back go against these precious stones

Delay in phone bill payments could effect your credit rating

The next time you delay or don't pay your phone bill, you may have to deal with more than just a call from your service provider reminding you about the dues. It may affect your credit score and mar chances of getting loans from banks.

According to Harshala Chandorkar, senior vice president-consumer relations, Credit Information Bureau of India or Cibil, the company is in discussions with leading telecommunication players like Vodafone and Bharti Airtel for using their respective databases and amalgamating these in the credit score.

Some telecommunication service companies already access credit scores of an individual to get a general overview of his/her credit history and determining credit limit. However, they do not contribute to the credit bureaus record. Presently, a credit score is based only on home, personal and car loans and credit cards.

However, though the discussions are still in preliminary stages, you should start familiarising yourself with concepts like credit limits for mobile bills and how these can impact. A credit limit is similar to a spending limit on credit cards, Cibil has approached Reliance Communication with a proposal to use their database to enable us profile our post paid customers. Their credit profiling framework is intended to help telecommunication players identify defaulters. It will also assist in assigning adequate credit limits. According to a Bharti Airtel spokesperson, credit limit is a function of a customers usage and past history. Numbers are assigned based on how long you've been with a service provider, security deposit, usage and payment history, services opted for. A steady high usage and regular payment means high credit limit. This limit is reviewed every month.

Although credit limit is also supposed to check your costs, it may often exceed your average monthly usage. You are notified only when you reach a certain percentage, sometimes on using 90 per cent of the limit. When you exceed your limit, there is a temporary restriction on outgoing calls and messages. To restart the services, you are required to make an interim payment. Say your credit limit is ~2,000 and by the twentieth of the month your bill reads ~2,500. You will have to pay a specific amount to bring the dues within the credit limit. The balance will be payable in the next bill.

Bharti Airtel is exploring a partnership with Cibil to leverage their databases. Industry players suggest the phone payment history when shared with credit bureaus will aid in setting credit limits. Much like the credit card issuers.

This may make it difficult for consumers to move to new service providers without clearing off dues. "There is no central database for service providers currently. If telecommunication companies share their data with Cibil, this may change

In Western countries, users with no prior credit history rarely get a post paid connection. They must use a prepaid connection first and after sufficiently building the credit history, apply for a pos tpaid one. Even then, if there are any defaults in payments, customers find it difficult to change service providers for post paid connections. A practice that may be applied in India as well.

Over the last few months, inflows into mutual funds have diminished considerably. The stock market volatility has investors with low and medium risk appetite treading with caution. In the backdrop of optimism in economic growth and better-than-expected agricultural and industrial output, the market turbulence may pass soon. However, with the European nations in debt far beyond their GDPs and the shadow of US debt looming not far away, equity investors have reason to worry.

NHAI bonds to list well on Exchanges

Optimism is building ahead of the listing of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) ~10,000-crore bond issue. Market players are expecting a repeat of the bumper profits seen last year when State Bank of India (SBI) bonds were listed.

High net worth individuals (HNIs) who'd failed to get their desired quantity of bonds due to the huge oversubscription are still trying off-market deals. The HNI saw demand worth ~8,120 crore against ~3,000 crore of bonds on sale. The institutional category saw demand for ~24,533 crore against ~4,000 crore for sale.

The grey market premium for NHAI bonds, ~5 when the issue closed for subscription on January 6, has now jumped to ~22. This means punters expect the bond to list at least ~22 above its face value of ~1,000, with considerable volumes in the market.

Similarly, the grey market premium for the ~5,000-crore Power Finance Corporation (PFC) bond has also rallied from ~5 to ~17- 18, dealers from broking firms here said. The NHAI listing will be followed with PFC's in mid-February.

Both had closed well before the last subscription date, due to heavy over-subscription.

The markets are excited about NHAI bonds, expected to list next Monday or Tuesday. It should be a repeat of the SBI bond listing. Also, bond holders are likely to get more money, as the cut-off date of interest payment, March 31, is near. HNIs do not want to let go of this opportunity.

The premium being offered in the grey market for SBI bonds then was ~320 per bond with a face value of ~10,000. The SBI Bond 'N' series was listed at a premium of ~365 on the National Stock Exchange against the face value of ~10,000. During the day, the counter also touched a high of ~10,385 before it closed at ~10,250.

What HNIs Look for in a Financial Advisor

What a high net worth individual should check before signing on a wealth manager

Managing a high net worth individuals (HNIs) account is a lucrative job for any wealth manager. After all, the stakes involved are high and the sums involved are huge. According to the 2011 Asia Pacific Wealth report from Merrill Lynch and Capgemini, high net worth individuals' (HNIs) wealth in India grew by 22% in 2009-10 accounting to $582 billion (Rs 28.4 trillion). India's HNI population grew to 1.53 lakh from 1.27 lakh in the same period. Looking at this huge growth and future potential, every intermediary is keen to grab a share of this growing pie. A number of brokerages, banks or boutique firms are expanding their reach beyond the metros by entering Tier II and even Tier III cities. So how do these HNIs choose their wealth managers?

HNI needs are very different as compared to normal investors. Besides traditional products such as equities, mutual fund and insurance, HNIs may also need business funding, or advice on succession planning or formation of a trust. They would consider things like capability and reputation of the organisation/ wealth manager, bouquet of products on offer, before selecting a wealth manager.

WHY HNI NEEDS ARE DIFFERENT

A normal investor's first priority is tax planning, followed by child's needs and financial planning to meet goals such as buying a home or car or an overseas holiday. Basic products such as mutual funds, bonds and insurance would often help meet these needs. However, in the case of most HNIs, many would have met these goals and would be looking beyond these goals. So HNI needs could include the likes of buying a property in Dubai, buying a structured product, picking up a stake in a promising or upcoming business, funding a real estate project through debt or could be even looking at the idea of buying into a distressed asset, or writing a complex will. These needs are far different from investment needs of a regular retail investor. Hence, they need someone with greater depth, understanding and necessary skill sets to meet these needs.

CHOOSING AN ORGANISATION

Choosing a wealth manager is not an easy task, given that the wealth management industry in India is fragmented and highly unregulated. Since all big brokerages along with private banks as well as foreign banks offer wealth management, making a choice gets that much tougher. Given the busy schedule of most HNIs, it is important to choose someone who can devote time and attention to minute details and handle things with confidentiality. The task becomes all the more difficult since wealth management firms do not have any audited or published performance available in the public domain. Hence, HNIs have to rely on their own judgement or seek references.

Larger organisations may have an edge since they can offer indepth research and views from the best analysts in the industry. Smaller organisations may score on account of their flexibility and ability to offer personalised service to their customers.

Organisations have different ways of classifying HNIs. Some foreign banks ask for higher threshold levels, while some banks may call you an HNI if you have 50 lakh in deposit, or a brokerage house may call you an HNI if you hold more than 10-lakh worth of stocks in your portfolio. If you have specific needs such as succession planning or overseas investing, then choose your organisation accordingly. Go with an organisation that has a long standing track record and one which can cater to your specific need

Alignment Of Interest & Trust

Since most organisations link a wealth manager's incentive to the amount of revenue he generates, often the wealth manager ends up selling high-revenue products irrespective of the fact whether that product fits in the client's portfolio or not. This could expose you to higher risk or tilt your asset allocation. Ask questions like what is the incentive structure for the wealth manager. Is it merely on revenue achieved or also on basis of clients' asset appreciation. This will give you an idea whether the organisation is looking to merely increase its profits by taking you as a client or there is more to it. At the same time, also see that the fees charged or charges are reasonable and is inline with industry trends. According to the PWC Global Private banking report 2011: In wealth management, reputation is everything. It is the foundation of trust, bringing successive generations to an institution for vision and advice." "Finally, ensure that there is alignment of interest. Essentially this means, for the wealth manager, the clients' wealth and objectives should always come first.

The Right Product Mix

Foreign banks have restrictions on products offerings and they can offer products only when approved by their global headquarters. Brokerages have the flexibility in terms of product offerings as the turnaround time is faster, but cannot offer a banking platform or savings bank account or forex transactions. HNIs need a wide range of product offerings with multiple products across asset classes," says Sunil Mishra. Since every individual has a different requirement, it is natural that the solution presented would be different. Check with the kind of products the organisation has come up in the past and how successful they have been.
For example, your wealth manager should be able to offer you a portfolio management scheme (PMS) from other organisations as well. Similarly he should be able to offer you structured products, real estate funds or alternate assets. You may also need advice on will drafting or succession planning. "Ensure that the wealth manager will help you meet those requirements, or at least has a tie up with a reputed agency.

Advisor Experience

More often it is the comfort with the advisor who you deal with that drives the relationship. HNIs prefer advisors with ability to understand and advice across asset classes. To advise across multiple asset classes, the advisor would need to be well educated and qualified. Hence it is important that you know how well qualified and experienced your advisor is. In countries like the US, Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) regulates advisors and each advisor has a registered number. So it is very easy to track the past credentials of any advisor. However, in India, there is no such agency tracking wealth managers and hence one would have to do his own homework.

Employee Churn

In good times, there is a lot of job hopping, where wealth managers change jobs and many a times the replacement given by the organisation may not be up to the client's satisfaction. The relationship manager whom they meet the most and do business with is the one they trust the most. It is the relationship manager who guides you in the entire journey. Of course these relationships are not build overnight. It could take as long as three years to build a strong relationship. So a new relationship manager's coming in could mean starting all over again. Hence, if the organisation has frequent employee churn, it could hurt your interest.

Mutual Fund NAV – Who Computes it and how is it Computed?

The fund management charges and exit load are the only way an asset management company (AMC) earns there is no other source of income. Exit load is actually a misnomer, as the load kicks in depending on the time you stay invested in the fund. For instance, funds charge an exit load depending on the time you stay invested in a fund. These loads are capped at 4 per cent and the regulatory mechanism enforces that only up to the first one per cent goes to the AMC with the rest being re-invested in the fund.

The responsibility of calculating and verifying the NAV rests with the AMC, with scrutiny by the market regulator SEBI and compliance mechanism within the AMC to ensure the NAV is calculated correctly. There are stated and well documented mechanisms to arrive at the value of the assets in which the fund has invested in while arriving at the NAV. For instance, a high investment in a small company may not cost the fund a lot of money, however, when the fund decides to offload its stake; the market value of such a stock for want of takers may fall steeply which can impact the value of the stock. There are also ways in which illiquid securities are valued when arriving at the NAV which are all well documented and regulated.
